Natural History Society of Jamaica

Natural History Society in collaboration with the Institute of Jamaica is all set to launch the EFJ funded publication Endemic Trees of Jamaica. With assistance from the Department of Life Sciences, University of the West Indies, Mona Campus the book documents all 316 species of endemic trees from around the island. The project also involved drying/mounting 100 species for a special collection at the Institute as well as training five technical officers in GIS Technology for manipulation of data.

Community Parks and Green Spaces

Three EFJ Grantees completed their community parks/green spaces in the last project cycle. Eastern Attractions, Claremont Citizens Association, and Eastern Attractions completed their community parks to encourage appreciation of nature within their communities and for aesthetic appeal.

Eastern Attractions
has successfully rehabilitated the Lyssons Public Bathing Beach into a sustainable public beach and park operated and managed by the community users of the beach with overall support by the NGO Eastern Attractions. The site also provides income generation for individuals who rent kiosks to sell food and beverages.

Parrottee Citizens Association Benevolent Society, received funding from EFJ to green the Parottee Beach Park, install fencing, picnic tables, and chairs to provide community members with a nature-filled spot for recreation and leisure activities.

Claremont Citizens Association
Community Green Park serves the community of Claremont and the wider Old Harbour Area. Greening/landscaping with fruit and non-fruit trees, installation of picnic tables and benches as well as fencing were activities carried out under this project.
